Help Me Help You is a group of young volunteers with money raised from private people in Europe have completely renovated the orphanage, painted it in bright colours, drawn pictures on the walls, fitted a kitchen, laid wooden floors, had made new beds with fitted drawers below to house the clothes, bought a bottle steriliser, installed a heater (donated by one of the students), bought clothes and toys, paid for physiotherapists to visit weekly, got rid of a mouse infestation and provided nappies and creams for skin conditions since October 2005.
In addition, they have given unselfishly of their time, love and compassion for these children and have held them and played with them day after day. They have taken them out to parks and playgrounds and held parties at Christmas and at other times for them. This commitment of unconditional love by this group of students and one or two of their teachers has been impressive.
In total the group has benefited from more than 15,000 Euros of donations which they have spent on improving the lives of the children. Before the request for money was made photos showed these babies and children having to wear rags for nappies and with terrible nappy rash and other skin conditions. The orphanage was just plain grey concrete, walls, floors etc and the kitchen was a sink. Many of the children remained in bed for the greater part of the day whereas now they are up and playing on the new floors.
The supporters gave their donations with love and they know that the money was spent in the correct way because there are three people always on site to verify where it is going. The news of this group and what they have achieved is recorded on DVD from television reportage, and various newspaper articles have followed their progress.
The website is under construction and won’t be finished until September 2007 because Matt, our fantastic rather slow webmaster has church duties and of course, a holiday to enjoy! [Edited by Matt]
Updates of receipts, photos, newspaper articles (mostly in Chinese) and much more information will be available.
Help Me Help You is away on holiday too but will resume their activities in September 2007. Presently one of HMHY’s physiotherapists, visits the orphanage twice a week and three student volunteers who have chosen to stay in Quzhou to find summer jobs continue to go play with the kids four times a week.
If you are a Quzhou local and would like to join in the fun and perhaps improve your spoken English or if you are new to Quzhou and would like to join us please email us!
If you would like to become penpals with the student volunteers, perhaps you are adopted from Quzhou orphanage and would like to stay more in contact with volunteers who go on a regular basis. Then please get in contact with us, we’d love to hear from you!
